Mussolini: The untold story (1985) {DVD Review}

Reviewed by Jason S. Lockard

For some reason we are infatuated with dictators. They seem to strike a chord with people. Whether it is because they share same beliefs or whether for most is it just like a car crash it's hard not to stare. One such leader was Mussolini. Now the good folks at Sprocket vault bring us the hard to find miniseries about Mussolini.

In 1985 NBC produced a near 7 hour miniseries chronicling the life and times of Benito Mussolini. The Italian fascist dictator was the inspiration for Hitler. Mussolini dreamed of a new Roman Empire and himself as Emperor. He was powerful arrogant and his followers were enthralled by his words. This miniseries shows Benito's rise and ultimate fall.

This miniseries stars the great George C. Scott as Mussolini and a very young Robert Downey Jr. as Benito's son Bruno. The acting is very good, but of course the stand out is George C. Scott. As with all his roles Scott puts everything he has into embodying the character.

This miniseries was nominated for two primetime Emmys. I don't know if you ever consider films about dictators enjoyable or entertaining, but it is an eye-opening film. And it always reminds me of the statement "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it!"

So if you love historical films as much as I do this is a definite add to your video library. Head over to The Sprocket Vault and pick up your copy today!
