Mickey Rooney started his acting career young. He starred in the Andy Hardy film series and in many musicals alongside the legendary Judy Garland. Many probably remember Rooney for these films. But his acting chops were massive.
In 1943, he put in a performance that is arguably the best of his entire career, in The Human Comedy. Now the good folks at Warner Archive Collection have restored and released this film on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
Synopsis: The poignant story of high school student Homer Macauley (Mickey Rooney) & the lives he touches while delivering telegrams throughout his small California town during the troubling years of World War II.
There were a lot of films that delt with World War II. Probably one of the best dramas that stood out to me would have to be The Best Years of Our Lives. But people don't talk about this film enough. It was nominated for four Oscars. Best Picture, Director, Actor & B&W Cinematography. And than won an Oscar for Best Story.
Mickey Rooney's performance is this film is gripping and inspiring. But Rooney isn't the only good performer in this fim he is joined by a cast of great actors and actresses, including Frank Morgan, James Craig, Marsha Hunt, Fay Bainter, Ray Collins, Van Johnson, Donna Reed, Jackie "Butch" Jenkins. Barry Nelson, Robert Mitchum and Don DeFore
The Human Comedy has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in the original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. It also includes English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The glorious black and white picture has been lovingly restored and looks and sounds crisp and clean. There is no damage to the print that I witnessed while screening this film. Warner Archive has another wonderful restoration. But they didn't just put a restored film on a Blu-ray, no way. They added some cool bonus features as well.
Special Features:
* Screen Guild Theater radio broadcast with Mickey Rooney and Frank Morgan 7/12/1943
* Screen Director's Playhouse radio broadcast with Mickey Rooney and Clarence Brown

* MGM short Don't You Believe It: A 10-minute featurette that shines a light on things in history we thought were true.

A classic cartoon and a wonderful informative short film make a nice addition. But the addition of not one, but two radio broadcasts, for me, takes this release to even greater heights. I truly love when radio programs are included on these Blu-rays.
