As soon as filmmaking became a thing, fairy tales were brought to the screen. And then Walt Disney changed the world when he started adapting fairy tales to film. In 1994, director Richard Rich, who had spent time at Disney Studios, decided to direct The Swan Princess based on the fairy tale ballet Swan Lake by Peter Tchaikovsky. Now Sony Home Entertainment is releasing this animated film on 4k for the first time ever.
Synopsis: When the beautiful princess Odette, is transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer's spell. Held captive at an enchanted lake, she befriends Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle and Puffin the bird. Despite their struggle to keep the princess safe, these good-natured creatures can do nothing about the sorcerer's spell, which can only be broken by a vow of everlasting love.
Now, in all honesty, I have never seen the ballet Swan Lake or this film before this viewing. But I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The animation is great; you can really see how Richard Rich was influenced by his time at Disney Studios. The story is fast-paced with great voice acting by Jack Palance, Howard McGillin, Michelle Nicastro, Liz Callaway and John Cleese. The combination of romance and comedy makes this film something that the whole family will enjoy.
The Swan Princess has been transferred to 4K UltraHD in 2160p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are audio tracks in English 5.1; English 7.1; French LT/RT; Spanish LT/RT. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Now, as I said before, this was my first time watching this film in any format. So really I can not compare it to anything else. But I can say that the picture is crisp and clean and the audio is clear. There are no digital artifacts or audio hiss or pops. The colors just pop off the screen in a rainbow spectacle.

For physical media fans, there is nothing like spinning that disc. But I love the addition of the digital copy as well. This is a nice bonus, as you can have the movie anywhere you go that you have an internet connection. If you're on vacation, on a business trip, or visiting the in-laws. You can take a break and enjoy a little fantasy adventure. That is a very cool bonus to me.
