Three years after the game's debut, New Line Cinema produced a film and then a sequel. Over the years, these two films have become cult classics, if not just plain action classics. Arrow Video has restored and released these two films on 4K for the first time ever!

Mortal Kombat (1995) An inter-dimensional martial arts tournament called Mortal Kombat, is held once every generation to maintain balance between realms. If the realm of Outworld wins ten consecutive tournaments, its Emperor, Shao Kahn, can invade and conquer Earthrealm. It is up to Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade to keep that from happening. ***
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) Emperor Shao Kahn opens a portal to Earthrealm and has resurrected Queen Sindel, Princess Kitana's long-deceased mother, to facilitate his invasion. Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and new allies are Earth's only hope for survival. **
Okay there is no denying that the original is a much stronger film that the sequel. But they are still highly entertaining and action packed peices of cinema that will take 90s kids back to their childhood for the awesomeness that was Mortal Kombat!
Both of these action classics have been lovingly restored in 4K and are presented in 2160p Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible). The audio options are the original DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround audio and lossless stereo audio on both films. Finally, there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing for both films.
Now I personally own these two films on DVD and watching them here is UltraHD is simply amazing. Yes, you can see the less-than-stellar CGI, but let's face it, even in the '90s, we knew the CGI wasn't spectacular; we just had never seen anything better at that point. But these restorations are simply gorgeous. In addition to new 4k restorations, Arrow Video added some great bonus features to this 4k release. Take a look at what is included.

With all new audio commentaries and interviews along with featurettes, b-roll, trailers, and galleries, there is no doubt that Arrow Video went above and beyond to make this release something special. But it doesn't stop there. These are just the on-disc bonuses. For this physical media release, Arrow Video also added a Collectors’ perfect-bound booklet featuring new writing on the films by Simon Ward and John Torrani. Reversible sleeves featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Matt Griffin. And last but certainly not least, two double-sided foldout posters featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Matt Griffin.
Mortal Kombat has always been one of my favorite 90s action films, and to see these two films get the super deluxe 4K treatment does my heart good. There is nothing like 90s action cinema and seeing them in 4K makes it that much better.
