After a successful series, specials and spinoffs. 20 years after the original series Hanna-Barbera debuted a new Saturday Morning Flintstone series entitled 'The New Fred and Barney Show'.
The short-lived series debuted on February 3, 1979. Now 47 years after its TV debut Warner Archive Collection is giving this series not just it's Blu-ray debut, but it's physical media debut.
In this "revival" series Fred and Barney find themselves in trouble with witches, werewolves, genies, vampires, Frankenstein monster and more. All this with the hilarious fun that made The Flintstones so much fun.
The New Fred and Barney Show is not on the level of the original not by a longshot. No one will ever say that. But it is a fun and entertaining little series. When watching certain episodes, I could help but think this says a kind of Scooby Doo feel to it. And I mean that in the best way possible. I think this series is a wonderful addition to the Flintstone mythology.
Sadly, the series didn't last but 2 seasons. 10 episodes in season 1 and 7 episode in season 2. Perhaps it was having to get new voice actors for the iconic characters. Maybe it was the reworking of the sitcom to give it the spookier feel with withes and such. Maybe it was the scheduling. But whatever the issue the show left the air way too soon.
Warner Archive Collection have restored and transferred the episodes in 1080p and are presented in 1.33:1 Aspect ratio. The audio track is and English DTS-HD MA 2.0 MONO. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The episodes look and sound spectacular on Blu-ray. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the picture is crisp and clean. These episodes are spread across two Blu-ray discs so there is no digital artifacts or audio anomalies to worry about.
Disc One: Sand-Witch / Barney's Luck / The Bad Luck Genie / Fred & Barney Meet the Frankenstones / Physical Fitness Fred / Fred Goes to the Houndasaurs / Moonlighters / Dinosaur Country Safari
Disc Two: Stone Age Werewolf / Haunted Inheritance / Roughin' It / C.B. Buddies / Bedrock Rocks / Blood Brothers / Barney's Chickens / The Butler Did It...and Did It Better / It's Not Their Bag
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Even though it is not as strong as the original series. 17 episodes spread across 2 Blu-ray discs. There is only one thing I have against this Blu-ray release. I wished there were some bonus features. A look back featurette, interviews, ect. That would have made this Blu-ray so much better.
If you are as much of a fan of The Flintstones franchise as I am, well, then you need this new Blu-ray of The New Fred and Barney Show in your home video library. Head over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy today.
