Who doesn't love a good murder mystery? Trying to figure out "whodunit" is so much fun. That is why people still read Sherlock Holmes. Film noirs are still popular in this generation. And shows like Murder She Wrote and Hart to Hart are still watched years after the series concluded.
Dean Dempsey brought the world a real life look at addiction with his film Candy Apple. But now he goes gritty with the mystery film Deadman's Barstool now on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay Entertainment and MVD Visual.
Synopsis: Mary is the conniving wife of a well-known televangelist who goes by the moniker 'John the Preacher'. Facing divorce with meager financial settlement, she partners with his mistress, Ginny, to rob JP of his cash fortune and split the loot. When they discover him dead from a gunshot wound to the head, their scheme starts to unravel piece by piece. Through a clever cover-up, his murder was ruled a suicide by the NYPD, but a crooked cop has other plans. When their attempt to pay off the detective backfires, a series of events unfold that reveal how the real perpetrators left them all outwitted and put out to pasture. Through a cast of offbeat characters and eccentric cameos, the story of one man's life and death takes twists and turns through the murky glint of a cocktail glass.
Deadman's Barstool runs a short 78 minutes. But in the best possible way this works. I feel it was any longer it would have become tedious and any shorter it would have felt rushed. Okay so it is not the best murder mystery you will ever see. But Dean Dempsey keeps you guessing through this fun little murder mystery!
The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio options an English Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0. Finally there are subtitles in English and Spanish.
This transfer is crisp and clean. There is no signs of compression issues or audio anomalies. The film looks great in HD! But a great looking transfer is not all this film has going for it there is also some bonus features.
* Theatrical Trailer
* The Plank Podcast w/ Dean Dempsey (66:16) Dean Dempsey joins Joshua Wagner and Jillian Garner on their pirate themed set. Many things are discussed, but the most interesting thing Dean talks about is his relationship with his dad which led to Candy Apple.
The bonus feature of the podcast is a really nice little bonus. But with the talk of Candy Apple it makes me wonder if that feature should have been a bonus feature for the Candy Apple Blu-ray release. But it is still a nice bonus feature.
If you have been enjoying the new Blu-rays that have been released by the newly revived Anchor Bay Entertainment. Well Deadman's Barstool may be a release you will want to add to your collection. Head over to MVD Shop or Amazon and order your copy today!
