Lady With A Sword (1971) Blu-ray Review

Kill Bill is the most iconic film that has a strong female lead seeking revenge. But long before Quentin Tarantino would direct Uma Thurman in that film, there was 1973's Lady Snowblood. The film that would inspire him to make that film. But even before that film, The Shaw Brothers were bringing film fans strong female characters out for revenge!

88 Films have been releasing some simply amazing Blu-ray release of Asian Cinema and the latest film to get a deluxe Blu-ray release is the 1971 revenge film Lady with a Sword!

Synopsis: When her sister is attacked and murdered, swordswoman Feng Fei-fei (Lily Ho, I) knows just what to do - find the culprits and slice 'em up. But her righteous vengeance is compromised when she learns just who her target is: the man her parents have arranged for her to marry.

In 1971 The Shaw Brothers hired actress Kao Pao-shu to direct her first film. That film would be Lady with a Sword. Even though Hollywood was hesitant about casting a film with a strong female, The Shaw Brothers were not. And Lily Ho (Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan) was tasked to take the reins of this film, and that she did.

The production value and scale of this film was mind blowing to me. The swordplay in this film is just insane! With bloody fights and vicious death scenes. But the story is well defined and the characters are developed nicely. This so much more than a pure action film this is a drama with human dilemmas. That is what takes this film from one level to a whole other level.

88 Films have transferred Lady with A Sword to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. The audio track is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mandarin Soundtrack with newly translated English Subtitles.

88 Films' transfer to Blu-ray really brings out the texture of the outdoor scenes. The picture is sharp and the audio is clear. There are no signs of damage to the film print I witnessed when screening this Blu-ray! But a wonderful film transfer is not all that is included on this release. Take a look at the bonus features included.

* Limited Edition Double-Sided Fold-out poster
* Audio Commentary with David West
* Stills Gallery
* Limited Edition O-ring
* Reversible Blu-ray Insert

David West the author of Chasing Dragon brings an insightful and informative commentary. This is a great listen. I love the bonus artwork whether it is the gorgeous O-ring, the reversible Blu-ray insert that features the new artwork also found on the O-ring and the original poster artwork. And the massive fold-out poster is suitable for framing. I always enjoy when these are included in the 88 Films Blu-rays.

88 Films have given Asian Film fans another Blu-ray that they will want to add to their collections with Lady with a Sword. The quality of these releases never ceases to amaze me.
