The Convent (2000) Synapse Films Blu-ray Review

Mike Mendez's horror films seem to have a unique bit of comedic flare to them. You want proof of that you have to just look at his films like Big A*% Spider and Lavalantula.

Mike Mendez started his feature film career with Killers now on Blu-ray from Synapse Films. But Synapse didn't stop there, not by a longshot they released arguably his most popular film 2000'sThe Convent on 4K UltraHD / Blu-ray.

Synopsis: In 1960, a young woman named Christine enters St. Francis Boarding School for Girls and lays waste to the resident nuns. Four decades later, a group of college students head to the long-abandoned building late one night to tag it with their fraternity letters, little knowing that rumors of the place being haunted are terrifyingly true. Stir in a couple of disapproving cops and a band of unlikely Satanists, and the table is set for a feast of demonic infestation and bloodshed that only the grown-up Christine (Adrienne Barbeau, THE FOG, SWAMP THING) can possibly stop.

Mike Mendez has created an ultra-crazy and ultra-fun "haunted house" film.  The film starts out with a 'bang' in fact quite a few bangs and the violence and gore doesn't let up too much till the final jump scare.

The acting is really believable. The standout of course is Adriene Barbeau. She is the bad mama kicking demons and taking names. Than there is Coolio and Bill Mosely the comedy cop duo. They are only on screen for a short time, but they make the most of that time and leave an impression.

Synapse Films has transferred The Convent to 4K in 2160p and is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio The audio is an English DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track from the original 16-track audio masters. There is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This new 4K remaster of the uncut version supervised and approved by director Mike Mendez. The Convent looks and sounds stunningly crisp and clean on 4K! The colors are bright and vibrant and the flesh tones are correct. The 4K is amazing, but if you haven't made the jump yet to 4K, the Blu-ray included in this 2 disc set is gorgeous as well! but that is not all that is included in this. Check out the bonus features!

* Cast and crew audio commentary

* “Lords of Hell” audio commentary featuring Saul and Dickie-Boy

I really believe this is probably Mike Mendez's best film. Though Big A*$ Spider holds a special place for me as well. Synapse Films really gave this film the deluxe treatment as you can see. With bonus audio commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes and more

So if you are looking for a fun gore fest for Halloween season The Convent is one to check out. Just be aware there is a lot of adult language, sexual content, and tons of violence. But it is done in a fun way! After all it is just a movie!
