Waitress: The Musical (2023) Blu-ray Review

As I grew up, I was thrown into the world of musical by my dad. I don't know how many times my family watched Oklahoma and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. But as I got older, I truly learned to appreciate and even love the musicals.

Broadway Musicals are a huge amount of work! In live productions there is no room for error. I have done stage productions and boy are they tough to keep everything just right! So, I have mad respect for these actors and actresses.

Well in 2016 Sara Bareilles brought the book Waitress by Jessie Nelson to the stage with music and lyrics she wrote. Now after many performances. The live production was recorded and now is released on Blu-ray!  

The Tony-nominated Broadway phenomenon comes home. Sara Bareilles is Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and expert pie maker stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest offers her a chance to reclaim part of herself.

This is a sweet, funny and dramatic story and music is truly amazing! The performances of every single actor and actress are almost prefect! If you have ever wanted to witness a musical live on stage but never wanted to sit in the audience, now you can from the comfort of your own living room! I have to say the way the production team changed scenes from with diner to dream sequences to doctor's office and more seamlessly. It was so impressive! Much respect for that!

Now as a parental warning. This stage production while wildly entertaining is not a family musical production. There is a good amount of adult language and adult situations. But adults will be so entertained from the opening segment to the closing number!    

Waitress the stage production has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and presented in 2.00:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This transfer is crisp and clean with no signs of digital artifacts. The colors are bright and vibrant and the audio is clear as a bell! This Blu-ray release really takes you right to the front row of this stage production. I truly enjoyed this musical.

Now as for bonus features! There are none! What a shame that is! I would have loved to see interviews with these actors talking about the production. And Sara Bareilles discussing the process of writing the music for this production. That would have made this release so much better.

Waitress was nominated for many awards including Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical: Jessie Mueller and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical: Christopher Fitzgerald.
