When you think comedy teams most people think The Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello. Maybe in this generation some forget about The Marx Brothers. That is a huge shame because The Marx Brothers zany antics and quick one-liners made their films so much fun to watch.
Now Universal Pictures Home Entertainment have released some of the Marx Brothers early films on Blu-ray. We recently reviewed the Blu-ray release of 1929's The Cocoanuts and 1931's Monkey Business. Now it is time for 1932's Horse Feathers to shine on Blu-ray.
The four Marx Brothers -- Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo -- are at the top of their game in the uproarious parody of college life, Horse Feathers. As president of Huxley College, the fun-loving Professor Wagstaff (Groucho) attempts to help his son (Zeppo) finally graduate after 12 years by arranging to "buy" professional football players for an upcoming big game against rival Darwin University. The plan takes an unexpected twist, however, when a bootlegger (Chico) and a dogcatcher (Harpo) are mistaken for the athletes and accidentally hired instead.
The Marx Brothers' Horse Feathers is an amazingly good comedy feature. The jokes are hilarious, Chico and Harpo's musical talents are on full display. And the football sequence at the end is so absurd that it makes no sense and yet is so much fun to watch you will never forget it! It's no wonder Horse Feathers earned a spot on the AFI's 100 Years 100 Laughs list.
Universal Picture Home Entertainment has released this film on Blu-ray. Horse Feathers have been transferred in 1080p the aspect ratio is the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Finally, there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Now we have seen some damage to some of these Marx Brothers Blu-rays. Now while there are some minor scratches on this print, this print of Horse Feather is very good! I am glad to say this film looks good, because this is one of my favorite Marx Brothers films.
Now in addition to seeing this Marx Brothers classic on Blu-ray. This release has a very interesting audio commentary by Film Critic F.X. Feeney. Then there is a full length 2016 documentary entitled "Marx Brothers: Hollywood's Kings of Chaos." This documentary is so good it is worth the price of the Blu-ray alone.
Even with the minor scratches and the documentary that is seen on all these releases. I still think this Blu-ray is a must own. Horse Feathers is a comedy classic and should be seen by everyone at least once.
So, if you love the Marx Brothers as much as I do Horse Feathers Blu-ray is a must for your collection. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today.
