The Black Phone (2022) 4k UltraHD/ Blu-ray Review

The Black Phone 4k UltraHD Cover
Ethan Hawke has starred in many films spanning all genres. But lately he has been focusing on layered gritty characters with major flaws. And he has been churning out some amazing performances. His latest is a character simply known as "The Grabber".

In 2022 Universal Pictures released The Black Phone and it has instantly become a cult classic. Now Universal Home Video are releasing The Black Phone on 4k UltraHD / Blu-ray / Digital combo so thriller movie fans can relive this pulse pounding film over and over again.

Finney, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer (Hawke) and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer's previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney.

I have to admit going into this film I felt as though I was going to hate it, I really did. And I was thoroughly wrong. The film is set in the late 1970s and the production design takes you right back there. You would think this film was shot in the 70s it is that good.

Mason Thames is great as Finney and Ethan Hawke is terrifying as The Grabber. The film is based on a story by Joe Hill and is a masterful piece of storytelling. The only thing that I disliked is the massive amounts of profanity. I am not a big fan of bad language in my film viewing.

The Black Phone has been transferred in 2160p in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is an English Dolby Atmos. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. There is also in addition Spanish and French subtitles. The film is shot with HD Camera and Super 8. The video is crisp and clean and even the super 8 video clips look amazing!

Now a simply amazing looking transfer to 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray is not all that is included on this release. Universal added some very cool bonus features. Take a look at the bonuses included in this 4K release.

* Audio Commentary by Scott Derrickson

* Deleted Scenes: Is This America Now?

* Deleted Scenes: No Dreams

* Ethan Hawke’s Evil Turn

* Answering the Call: Behind the Scenes of The Black Phone

The Black Phone is an exciting thrilling horror ride, that looks stunning in 4k. But The bonus features seen above take this release to the next level. The insightful audio commentary is a must listen to. The featurettes really take you behind the camera. And the bonus short film is a nice bonus.

And to go a step further Universal Pictures has also added a digital copy of this 4K UltraHD film that you can redeem on VUDU/ Fandango, Movies Anywhere or Youtube. I love the addition of a digital copy that you can have with you anywhere you go! Even though I am a physical media proponent!
