A Bullet For Sandoval (1969) Blu-ray Review

A Bullet for Sandoval Blu-ray Cover
Ernest Borgnine is an Academy Award winning actor. He won the best actor Oscar for 1955's Marty. But maybe best known for his lead role in the TV sitcom McHale's Navy!

Three years after he finished the 3-year run of McHale's Navy Ernest Borgnine would join George Hilton for an adventure in a very different scene. This time in a spaghetti western entitled A Bullet for Sandoval.

John Warner (George Hilton) is a rebel soldier who deserts his outfit on the eve of battle and goes over the border into Mexico to be with his girlfriend when she gives birth to their child. When he arrives, Warner finds that his fiancée has died in childbirth and her father, Don Pedro Sandoval (Ernest Borgnine), lusts only to kill him.

A Bullet for Sandoval is a raw and gritty western that was directed by Julio Buchs. Sadly he died at the very young age of 43. When watching this film you can see he had a great eye for filmmaking. He only made 15 films. I can only imagine what other great film he could have made had he lived.

Ernest Borgnine is captivating in his role as Sandoval. While A Bullet for Sandoval may not be as iconic a western as say The Good the Bad and The Ugly, it is a tremendous, little film. With spectacular images.

VCI Entertainment and MVD Visual has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio language options to choose from Spanish and English. And there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

A Bullet for Sandoval has received lackluster physical media releases in the past. But these have suffered from bad looking prints. Well, I am excited to say that VCI Entertainment's release features a remastered and restored film in 4k from the original uncut negative. This is truly the best I have ever seen this film look! But VCI and MVD added some cool bonus features to this Blu-ray. Take a look at what is included.

*  Commentary by Alex Cox (Writer / Director best known for ‘Repo Man’ + ‘Sid & Nancy’)

* Original Spanish Open

* Original US Theatrical Trailer

A Bullet for Sandoval has been so beautifully restored and remastered that I can't recommend it enough for spaghetti
 western fans. western fans will be amazed at how good this restoration really looks. And with the inclusion of an insightful commentary, extended dialogue sequence, trailer and two versions of the films. This is an epic release.
