Needful Things (1993) Blu-ray Review

Stephen King is one of the most prolific horror writers of all time. He has written some of the most terrifying stories and many of those stories have been adapted into feature films and TV movies.

Now Stephen King films are either really good or really bad. But I enjoy watching them, especially at Halloween time. My favorites have got to be Misery, Thinner, The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption and Pet Semetary. Though admittedly Geen Mile and Shawshank Redemption are far from horror.

So, when a new Blu-ray release of a Stephen King film is announced to be released, I am on board for that. Well, Kino Lorber Studio Classics announced a deluxe 2 Disc Blu-ray release of the 1993 film Needful Things.

Sheriff Alan Pangborn (Ed Harris) has a devil of a problem: Suddenly all the resident of the sleepy little town are dying... to kill each other. But at least business is still booming, especially at a new antique store. The shop's mysterious owner Leland Gaunt (Max Von Sydow), has something for everyone, and his prices are always reasonable: just one small favor... of, and of course, eternal damnation!

Needful Things is a terrifying adventure. Ed Harris is really good as the stoic sheriff, but the best performance in this film is from the legendary Max Von Sydow. His chilling portrayal of the shop owner will haunt you long after the film's end credits roll.

Needful things have been transferred in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio and features a bran new 4K Scan of the original camera negative! There are two audio options a 5.1 Surround sound and a 2.0 lossless audio. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This new 4K Scan of the film looks and sounds stunning. There is no damage to this print. But a gorgeous looking transfer is not all that is included in this set. Kino Lorber added some extremely cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included in this set.

* Audio Commentary by Director Fraser C. Heston, Moderated by Scorpion Releasing's Walt Olsen

* The 191 Minute Television Cut of the Film

* The Devil is in the Details: Interview with Screenwriter W. D. Richter

* Theatrical Trailer

* Slipcover with different artwork

It is so cool to see Needful Things receive a 4K Scan. With a very interesting audio commentary and awesome interview with the screenwriter. But I think what takes this amazing release to a whole other level is the addition of the ultimate Television cut of this film. Now of course depending on the viewer, some may love the shorter theatrical version, while may love the longer version. But Kino Lorber really went above and beyond here and added both. That is a very cool thing.

So, if you love Stephen King films this new deluxe Blu-ray release of Needful Things is a must own for your collection. Kino Lorber has also released this film in 4K UltraHD as well! Head over to Amazon to order the Blu-ray or the UltraHD release today.
