Juggernaut (1974) KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review

Richard Lester was an American director that brought the world many iconic films over his career. We saw such films such as; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966), The Beatles' films A Hard Day's Night (1964) and Help! (1965), the superhero films Superman II (1980) and Superman III (1983) and The Three Musketeers (1973) Just to name a few.

Well in 1974 Richard Lester directed a British crime suspense film featuring an all star cast and that film was entitled Juggernaut. Now as we are heading toward the fiftieth anniversary of this films release, the good folks at KL Studio Classics are giving this film a chance to shine on Blu-ray.

When a luxury cruise ship reaches the high seas, its owner (Ian Holm) receives a disturbing phone call from a man known only as Juggernaut (Freddie Jones) : Pay a steep ransom or he will explode the ship. Soon after the demand, explosives expert Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Fallon (Richard Harris) and his squad parachute onto the cruise ship to defuse the rigged time bombs. On land, Superintendent John McLeod (Anthony Hopkins), who has family on board, searches for the terrorist.

When looking at the poster and the trailer for the film, you might think, "this is a disaster film!" But that is not true! This is a suspense drama. Richard Lester feels this is why the film was not as much of a success as it should have been. This is far from Richard Lester's best film, but it is still a pretty good little suspense film.

The story is a well created one. Richard Lester's directing expertise is on full display here and the acting is great. Featuring the acting talents of Richard Harris (Gladiator), Omar Sharif (Doctor Zhivago), David Hemmings (Deep Red), Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs), Shirley Knight (The Sweet Bird of Youth), Ian Holm (The Fifth Element), Clifton James (The Man with the Golden Gun, Live and Let Die) and Roy Kinnear (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory).

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The Audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The transfer looks and sounds pretty good. There is some minor specks and debris on this print, but it is minor and shouldn't take away from the viewing of this film. But a nice transfer is not all that this Blu-ray has going for it. Kino Lorber added some nice bonus features, take a look at what is included.

* NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson

* Trailers: Jugernaught (Trailer and TV Spot), The Groundstar Conspiracy, Gold, The Eiger Sanction, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Rosebud, Marathon Man, Sudden Terror, When Eight Bells Toll, Cuba

In the final analysis of this film. I think you will enjoy watching this release, but you may not be reaching on the shelf to re-watch this one over and over. But this Blu-ray is still going to be a great way to witness this film!

So if you love Richard Lester films or suspense dramas the 1974 film Juggernaut this new Blu-ray release may just be what you are looking for. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
