Blu-ray Review: Peter Falk 4 Film Comedy Collection

Peter Falk may be best known for his time playing detective Columbo. But before Peter Falk would become a TV icon he would co-star in some amazingly hilarious comedy adventures. Some of which have been released on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment, as a part of the Jack Lemmon collections and the Through the decades 1960s and 1970s collections.

Now as we are into 2023 the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are giving Peter Falk's films a chance to shine in a new Blu-ray collection. On this new set we get four count them four classic comedies feature Peter Falk himself. Let's take a look at what is included in this 2 disc set.

Our Rating System:
**** = Don’t Miss it!
*** = Worth a look.
** = An OK way to spend an evening.
* = You haven’t missed anything.

LUV (1967) Milt (Peter Falk) stops unlucky-in-love Harry (Jack Lemmon) from jumping off a bridge. Grateful, Harry agrees to marry Milt’s neurotic wife Ellen so Milt can marry Linda. Soon after, Ellen and Milt realize that they are still in love and will stop at nothing to be together again. ***

The Cheap Detective (1978) Lou Peckinpaugh is the worldly, cynical gumshoe who takes on thugs, crooks, Nazis, femme fatales, and the Golden Gate Bridge. In this spoof of Humphrey Bogart like film noirs ***

Big Trouble (1985) Steve (Peter Falk) and Leonard (Alan Arkin) are a wacky pair of insurance swindlers, aided and abetted by Blanche (Beverly D'Angelo). Trying to raise money, the three get involved in a scheme to cash in on an accidental death policy but get sidetracked by a series of hilariously unforeseen twists. **

Happy New Year (1986) Criminals Nick (Peter Falk) and Charlie (Charles Durning) plan a jewelry store heist, disguising themselves to win the trust of the store manager (Tom Courtenay). However, when Nick starts falling for Carolyn (Wendy Hughes), owner of the antique shop next door, the plan goes awry. ***

These four films are so much fun to watch. They range from spoof film noir to slapstick to romantic comedy. This is a great mix of comedies. It is good to note however, these are more adult comedies. Some films have sexual content and profanity, so parental guidance is suggested before letting your teenagers watch these films.

Peter Falk is so entertaining in this collection. He truly is the stand out star here. But in this collection of films we see many other great performers and comedians. You will be amazed to see Jack Lemmon (The Apartment), Alan Arkin (Wait Until Dark), Beverly D'Angelo (National Lampoon's Vacation, Christmas Vacation).

Now if thoese names weren't enough in addition we see these greats, Ann-Margret (Viva Las Vagas), Eileen Brennan (Private Benjamin), Sid Caesar (Your Show of Shows), Stockard Channing (Grease), James Coco (The Muppets Take Manhattan), Dom Deluise (The Cannonball Run), Elaine May (The Heartbreak Kid), Nina Wayne (The Night Strangler) and many other. This is a true whos who of entertainment.

These four films have been transferred on 2 Blu-ray discs in 1080p. They are presented in 2.0 stereo audio and in widescreen format. Happy New Year and Big Trouble are in 1.85:1 aspect ratio while Luv and The Cheap Detective are in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

These film transfers are really nice. All four films look and sound really great! The picture quality of these films are sharp as a tack with no signs of damage to the prints. The audio is clear with no hiss or pops. With two films on one Blu-ray disc there is more than enough room for these two films without them suffering from pixilation issues.

It is so cool to see the genius of Peter Falk get a chance to shine on Blu-ray. The only downside I see with this 2 disc Blu-ray set is the lack of bonus features. But for me to see 4 classic comedies on one collection. More than enough to call this a must own.

So if you enjoyed Peter Falk's Columbo, you need to see these classic comedies. Four comedies for a low low price. You can not beat this. If you love to laugh, head over to Deep Discount and order your copy today.
