Edgar G. Ulmer Sci-fi Collection {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Edgar G. Ulmer was a director of many films for the 1930s into the 1960s. His most notable films are probably 1934's The Black Cat and the 1945 film noir Detour. But he also directed some quite amazing little B Sci-fi features.

Now Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics are releasing a Triple Feature of Edgar G. Ulmer Sci-fi films on Blu-ray. And as an avid B Sci-fi movie fan I could not be happier. Let's take a look at what is included in this triple feature.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An OK way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

The Man From Planet X (1951) It is discovered that a mysterious planet is hurling itself toward Earth. Soon an extraterrestrial scout appears on a remote Scottish island. But with his  intentions unknown, tensions rise to dangerous levels.  ***

Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) A military test pilot in 1960 finds himself in a time warp. He is thrust into the future of the year 2024. But he doesn't find a better future, instead he finds a plague has sterilized the world's population. ***

The Amazing Transparent Man (1960)
A safecracker escapes from prison aided by an ex-army Major. The reason is he needs the escapee to steal some radium. All so he can build an invisible army. **

All three films are housed on one Blu-ray disc. Now before anyone thinks that is too much! All three of these films combined only run 3 hours and 24 minute. So there is plenty of room for all three films without any loss of quality.

The sci-fi cult classics are presented in 1080p with The Man from Planet X presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio and Beyond the Time Barrier and The Amazing Transparent Man presented in 1.85:1. The latter two have been transferred in a brand new 2K scan. The audio is a English DTS-HD 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now examining these transfers The Man from Planet X looks pretty nice on this Blu-ray but Beyond The Time Barrier and The Amazing Transparent Man are stunning! They are crystal clear with no signs of damage. These two 2K masters are worth the price alone.

KL Studio Classics have put together a nice triple feature of Ulmer cult classics. But they didn't stop with just 3 films not by a long shot! They added some really nice bonus features. Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray.
