Gambit (1966) {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Most of the world knows The Pink Panther films. They are known for the comedy heist craziness. The classic Pink Panther works so well because of Peter Sellers. A few years after The Pink Panther debuted on film came another comedy heist film featuring the great Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine.

Now the great folks at Kino Lorber under the division of KL Studio Classics have given this 1966 film entitled Gambit an amazing Blu-ray release this classic so richly deserves.

Harry Dean (Michael Caine) is has spent the better part of his life as a burglar. But now he has his sights set on stealing a piece of priceless art from the world's wealthiest man, Mr. Shahbandar (Herbert Lom). He sets out this elaborate plan that includes the help of exotic showgirl Nicole Chang (Shirley MacLaine). Everything is perfect, except for the execution of the plan. When everything goes awry.

The direction of Ronald Neame is spectacular and the performances of this cast is absolutely top notch. Gambit truly draws you in right from the beginning and your right there along for the ride clear to the end, enjoying every single second of this comedic adventure. The film runs 1 hour and 49 minutes but its so enjoyable that it doesn't feel that long at all.

Gambit arrives on Kino Lorber Blu-ray from a brand new 4K restoration from Universal Pictures. The film is transferred this film in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio the soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master audio 2.0. I must say I an Gambit looks so stunning on Blu-ray it is just mind blowing!

Now Kino Lorber added some very cool special features to this Blu-ray. Let's take a look at what is included.

Gambit was Oscar-nominated for 'Art Direction', 'Set Decoration' and 'Best Costume Design' and rightfully so. It is a beautifully shot film. In 2012 there was a remake made of the same name, which we won't talk about. If you want to see the best version of this story it is this one. And this Blu-ray is the best way to experience it!
