The Secret War of Harry Frigg (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Paul Newman was an actor, director, race car driver, and entrepreneur. During his lifetime he did it all! He starred in so many iconic film over his career, probably the most memorable was 1967's Cool Hand Luke.

I am always interested in seeing a Paul Newman film I have never experienced and Kino Lorber has released one on Blu-ray with The Secret War of Harry Frigg.

After Five Allied officers were captured in Tunisia during WW II and than incarcerated in a comfortable Italian mansion. Enter private Harry Frigg a man who has escaped from the guard house a dozen times. Truly this man is the one that could rescue these officers. So Frigg is promoted to major general and given the task of helping the officers to escape. When Frigg enters the mansion is his distracted by the beautiful owner of the mansion. Will he complete his mission? You'll have to see the film to find out!

This is a very fun little film! While Paul Newman was known for his dramatic roles, it was so awesome to see Paul Newman spread his wings and show his comedic side. And it was very smart of director Jack Smight to surround him with a stellar cast of comedic actors.

Now Kino Lorber has transferred this film in widescreen format (2.35:1) 1920x1080p and in 2.0 DTS-HD Master audio. The video looks gorgeous the colors are vibrant and there is just the right amount of film grain. As for the audio it sounds crisp and clear with no signs of pops or cracks. There is also optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing!

Kino Lorber never gives there Blu-rays just the movie, oh no! Kino Lorber Studio Classics added some good special features. There is a very insightful new audio commentary by Film Historian/Filmmaker Daniel Kremer and Film Historian/Biographer Nat Segaloff. There is also the original trailer for the film as well as other trailers for Kino Lorber releases you may just want to add to your collection.

As a fan of Paul Newman I have to say this is a really nice addition to my collection. Many films are a one view experience. I am going to re-watch this, it was that much fun and the transfer is so eye pleasing. The Secret War of Harry Figg is a tremendous Blu-ray!
