Kino Lorber Blu-ray Review: Continental Divide

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

When we say the name John Belushi you probably think the Blues Brothers or his crazy characters he played on Saturday Night Live. One thing you probably wouldn't think is Romantic Lead. But in 1981 he starred in a romantic comedy entitled Continental Divide.

Kino Lorber known for bringing great older films, some forgotten to Blu-ray has done it yet again bringing this John Belushi rarity to Blu-ray for the first time ever.

The film follows a Chicago reporter named Ernie Souchak (Belushi). Ernie writes about the unethical city councilman. Afterward he is beaten up by double-dealing police officers. His editor hopes to keep Ernie safe and tells him to head west. When he makes it to Wyoming, Ernie strikes up a romance with bird scientist Nell Porter (Blair Brown). When he returns home he find himself back into city politics. Than Nell finds herself in Chicago to discuss her research, this could be the two's last chance to reunite. Will they? Well, you have to watch the film to find out.

John Belushi really showed he was much more than just an off the wall crazy character actor. He really proved he had the acting chops to be a leading man. But sadly this we one of his final films before his tragic death.

As for this film it has been transferred in it's original widescreen 1.85:1 1920x1080p. The film looks exceptionally good on Blu-ray. There is no signs of damage or blemishes to the print. There is also English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing which is always a nice addition. There is also the Theatrical Trailer and trailers for other Kino Lorber Blu-ray releases.

One of the best features on this Blu-ray is the new Audio Commentary by Film Historian/Filmmaker Daniel Kremer and Film Historian/Biographer Nat Segaloff. This is a commentary that is filled with great information. You could listen to it several times and still get new information that you didn't get the first time.

Even though the film was maybe not considered a box office success. I really enjoyed it! It was nice seeing John Belushi is a different kind of role, than I was used to. He deserves a lot of credit for getting out of the comfort zone and doing something different.

So if you are a fan of John Belushi, romantic comedies or 80s cinema. I can not recommend this film enough. The Kino Lorber Blu-ray is beautiful and would make a great addition to anyone's collection.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) Kino Lorber's Continental Divide Blu-ray receives...
