The Slowest Gun in the West {DVD Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Phil Silvers was known as
"The King of Chutzpah" and one of the greatest comedians of all time. Best known for his time as Sergeant Bilko on his TV series. After the show ended. He and Bilko creator Nat Hiken reunited to make 4 hour long TV specials. The slowest gun in the West was one of those hilarious specials. Now the good folks at Alpha Video is giving the classic tv fans a chance to own this special with an awesome bonus feature on the DVD.

The slowest gun in the West takes place in the town of Primrose, Arizona. The town is overrun by outlaws. Every sheriff hired is murdered. The mayor finally turns to Fletcher Bissell III, better known as "The Silver Dollar Kid", a lawman who is so much a coward, no gunslinger wants to sully their reputation by shooting him.

Soon peace is restored and the crooks realize the only way to get rid of Bissell is to hire a gunman just as cowardly as he is. They find one in "Chicken" Finsterwald (Jack Benny), who once shot an 84-year-old woman in the back. Now it's a showdown between the two slowest guns in the West...if they don't die of fright first!

This hour long adventure bringing two of the funniest TV comedians together for a romp in the Old West. Phil Silvers and Jack Benny are a golden team. Now Alpha Video figured they would double the fun with this release and bring us the consumer more for our money. So as a special bonus we get another Old West comedy TV movie.

'Fair Play' follows city slicker Teddy McGill who arrives in the Western town of Fair Play looking for his uncle F.O. He soon finds himself in the middle of a feud between F.O. and the ornery Purvis clan.

Both of the TV presentations are presented in their original full screen format. The Slowest gun in the West is in black and white, while Fair play is in color. The picture and audio quality of these two films are good when you realize the age of this pictures. There is some damage to the prints, but I have seen worse.

This is a nice little release. I am proud to display this DVD release right in my Phil Silvers collection. Classic TV fans will love having this piece TV history as well.

So if you are a fan of Phil Silvers, Jack Benny, or comedy westerns this DVD is a great add for your collection. Head over to www.Oldies.com and get your copy today!
