Star Trek: The City on the Edge of Forever

Reviewed By Jason S. Lockard

Harlan Ellison’s episode of the original Star Trek ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’ is filled with action, adventure and romance, but we didn’t see his original vision for that episode.

IDW Publishing released a 5 issue Star Trek mini-series based on this classic episode. Now all 5 issues have been released in one hard cover book.

In Harlan Ellison’s original story Beckwith, a drug-dealing Enterprise crew-member murders one of his buyers and then escapes through a time portal to get away. In doing so he changed history and thus the future. So now it is up to Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock to travel back in time and set right the things that Beckwith changed. But little did Kirk now that the past would hold more for him than just setting right what once went wrong.

This teleplay is dark and gritty! It is a psychedelic trip! The writing of Scott and David Tipton belongs in the Star Trek universe and the art work of J.K. Woodward is something out of a classic oil painting! The characters look just like they did in the TV series. There is some bonus behind the screens pages included in this hardcover book as well! This book is getting a place of prominence on my shelf!

Is the TV episode the way it originally was filmed better? Probably! But this is a beautiful companion piece to anyone's Star Trek Original Series collection.

If your a Star Trek fan this awesome hardcover trade back is a must own for your collection! I highly recommend you head over to www.IDWPublishing.com or buy on Amazon here you won’t regret it!
