Blu-ray Review: The Vagrant (1992)

Dark horror comedies can be a lot of fun when done right. You want proof of that all you have to do is look at films like, Beetlejuice, Little Shop of Horrors, Gremlins and Tremors. Now one such film that tried to capitalize on the horror comedy genre was 1992's The Vagrant.

Now the good folks at Arrow Video knowing how much we the film fanatics love seeing films we grew up on restored, decided to give The Vagrant a brand new deluxe Blu-ray release. Now horror comedy fans have something to shout for joy and horror about.

Graham Krakowski (Bill Paxton) has just bought his new home. He is up for a promotion at work, and his girlfriend is flying into town to visit. Everything is coming up roses for him! Well, that is until he finds out that he is not quite home alone. When he discovers a vagrant (Marshall Bell) at his house, his life goes from good to bad in a hiccup. As the vagrant lurks around his house, people begin to die and Graham is the prime suspect.

The Vagrant is one of those films that you will find yourself laughing at, even though there is gore, horror, profanity, suggestive material and nudity. Probably one of the major reasons for that is the over the top performance of Bill Paxton. He throws himself into this character whole heartedly and it makes viewing experience. Also look out for the great Michael Ironside in this film!

We probably all saw some of his work, as it has been highlighted in such films as E.T. the Extraterrestrial, Gremlins, The Fly, The Fly II, Arachnophobia and Enemy Mine just to name a few. His amazing work landed him the opportunity to direct his first film the sequel The Fly II, an episode of Tales from the Crypt "Till Death" and than this film The Vagrant. He had a great eye for direction. It's a shame he never got the chance to direct more films.

Arrow Video have restored this film in 2K from the original camera negative. It is presented in 1080p and the soundtrack is a stereo 2.0. Finally there is a English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. I must say that the picture looks sharp as a tack with no signs of damage to this print. It is a remarkable looking transfer.

Now Arrow Video is known for their bonus feature and this release is no different. Take a look at what is included in this release.

* Vagrant Memories, a new interview with director Chris Walas

Now while I enjoy a good dark comedy like many of the rest of the film fans, The Vagrant was a little bit much more me. The gore, profanity, nudity seemed a bit of an overkill for me, but the storyline is dark fun. I know there are film fans that don't mind this kind of content, so they will be in love with this delightfully dark fun tale. And if you want to see it in this new 2K restoration is the perfect way to do so.

So if you love the twisted dark comedies of the 90s this new Blu-ray release of The Vagrant is one you are going to want to add to your collection. Head over to
