My Name is Julia Ross (1945)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Joseph H. Lewis was a director of poverty row type films. These were film generally made for under $25,000 and in less than a week. He had a unique visual style.

His first film for Columbia Pictures was My name is Julia Ross. Now the great folks at Arrow Video have decided to give this B-movie noir a HD release it truly deserves.

A young woman named Julia Ross (Nina Foch) takes a job in London as a live-in secretary for a wealthy widow named Mrs. Hughes (Dame May Whitty). The next morning she wakes up in a different mansion. Mrs Hughes and her volatile son, Ralph (George Macready), insist she is Ralph's wife, Marion, who has had a nervous breakdown. Is she really Marion Hughes and was Julia Ross just a dream, or is something more sinister happening! Well, you'll have to see the film to find out.

The film was masterfully adapted from Anthony Gilbert’s novel The Woman in Red. Nina Foch is a perfect as a sympathetic yet strong lead. Then there is Joseph H.
Lewis’ trademark visual style. It is a true B-movie classic.

Arrow Academy did a beautiful job as always in transferring this film in
High Definition 1080p full screen presentation. The audio is in the original uncompressed mono PCM audio and includes optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. The film looks and sound stunning.

As for the bonus features; there is an audio commentary by noir expert Alan K. Rode. He brings a lot if information about the film and the actors. There is a featurette Identity Crisis: Joseph H. Lewis at Columbia – The Nitrate Diva (Nora Fiore) provides the background and an analysis of the film. And a Theatrical trailer.

As for the actual blu-ray there is a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Scott Saslow. And for FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by author and critic Adrian Martin.

If you love film noirs as much as I do and you enjoy bonus features this is a great little release. I highly recommend this one for your collection. Head over to
